The Clonagh Herd celebrated a unique victory at the National Livestock Show, Tullamore in August securing both the Overall Male and Overall Female titles. Supreme Champion and Overall Male of the show went to our senior her sire, “Banwy T-Rex” who was earlier crowned the National Senior Bull Champion for the third year in a row.
Take the Female and reserve Overall champion of the show was our latest edition to the herd, “Raceview Abbey Princess” who was earlier crowned the National Junior Heifer Champion. Abbey was purchased at the Premier sale in Roscommon in November 2009 to celebrate our 20th year in breeding Simmentals.
In total we exhibited 15 cattle at the National Livestock Show including two Limousin heifers. Of the four National Simmentals classes competed in three title were claimed.
Our young heifers did us extremely proud in our first class of the day with three Banwy T-Rex daughters finishing in the top eight of an extremely competitive class of 22 autumn 2009 heifers. Topping our line up in third place was a powerful red heifer, “Jennalyn Anora” our of a heifer Jennalyn Tina by Dirnanean Jacob. This heifer has previously claimed first prizes at Tinahely Show a week beforehand beating our junior heifer “Raceview Abbey Princess” in her class. In fourth place was “Clonagh Absolutely Fabulous” one of the youngest heifers in the class. She is out of a Dovefields Gallant cow Clonagh Shania Babe. In eight place was a Banwy T-Rex daughter from Cork, “Milton Amour” who was already Reserve Female Champion at the Southern Club calf finals in July.
Following on from this was a large All Ireland class of junior heifers which was won by “Raceview Abbey Princess” who later went on to claim the overall female championship of the show.
Not wanting to be overshadowed by the ladies, our autumn bull calves did extremely well in against some very strong for age bulls in the autumn 2009 bull class. Taking second position was the much admired “Clonagh Awesome Truley” by Banwy T-Rex out of our junior show cow Clonagh Truley Scrumptious. This October bull was giving away well over a month to the first prizewinner so we were delighted with his performance. In fourth place was the up to then unbeaten “Jennalyn Allstar” again by Banwy T-Rex.
The next class was the National Junior bull class which was dominated by Clonagh cattle taking first, second and fourth positions. Leading the way was “Clonagh Admire Me” by Banwy T-Rex our of a Hillcrest King cow Cloneygowan Primrose. In reserve position was “Jennalyn Adonis” also by Banwy T-Rex out of a Ballybane Henry cow Balylbane Nora. In fourth spot was the young bull in the class, “Clonagh Accident” who was a result of two members of the 2008 show team “Clonagh Tilly Fiona” and “Clonagh Vom Vumb” getting a bit frisky after a show! All of these bulls are currently being offered for sale.
